Recap of the 2025 I2DB Scientific Symposium: Bridging Causal Inference and Data Science to Advance Medicine

The I2DB Scientific Symposium on February 12th, 2025, was a remarkable event that drew a diverse array of attendees and featured an impressive list of speakers and programming. The symposium saw robust participation from the scientific community, attracting experts, researchers, and students from various institutions and disciplines.

The event kicked off with our lightning talk speakers. Each speaker delivered an informative and thought-provoking 5-minute talk on their topic of choice. Our lineup included:

  • Linying Zhang, PhD – Real-world evidence generation in federated health data networks: and OHDSI approach
  • Andrew P. Michelson, MD – Bits and Bytes at the Bedside: AI’s Precision Promise in
    Critical Care
  • Fuhai Li, PhD – Explainable Graph AI to Decode Complex Cell Signaling Systems
  • Laura Weis, PHD – Revolutions in Biomedical Computing: The Washington University Computer Laboratories

The day continued with a keynote address by Dr. Miguel Hernán, whose expertise in causal inference helped shape this year’s symposium theme. Following the keynote, we hosted a distinguished panel of multidisciplinary experts who provided insights on a wide range of topics.

Finally, we concluded the event with the Datathon competition and poster sessions, where emerging researchers showcased their work. This provided attendees the opportunity to network and reflect on the shared knowledge and collaboration.

Since we love data and aim to make next year’s event even better, we would love to hear your thoughts. Please take a moment to complete our event survey. Your feedback is invaluable.

Miguel Hernán, MD, DrPH
Professor and Director of CAUSALab
Harvard University

Miguel Hernán uses health data and causal inference methods to learn what works. As Director of CAUSALab at Harvard, he and his collaborators repurpose real world data into evidence for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and mental illness. This work has contributed to shape health policy and research methodology worldwide.
