Dr. Philip Payne leads publication on AI code of conduct for healthcare

A new paper in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), led by Philip R. O. Payne, PhD, addresses the need for a unified framework to guide the ethical and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health and healthcare. 

Dr. Payne collaborated with experts Kevin B. Johnson, MD, MS, Thomas M. Maddox, MD, MS, Peter J. Embi, MD, MS, Kenneth D. Mandl, MD, MPH, Deven McGraw, JD, MPH, Suchi Saria, PhD, and Laura Adams, MS, to publish, “Toward an Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct for Health and Healthcare: Implications for the Biomedical Informatics Community.” 

The National Academy of Medicine’s Digital Health Action Collaborative is spearheading the development of an AI Code of Conduct (AICC). The paper emphasizes the importance of the biomedical informatics community in actively participating in the refinement and implementation of these guidelines. 

Dr. Payne’s leadership in this initiative underscores his commitment to ethical AI practices in health care, helping to establish essential standards for collaboration and innovation in the field.
