AHRQ highlights Dr. Joanna Abraham’s work on enhancing postoperative handoff communications

Congratulations to principal investigator Joanna Abraham, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, and her team for their publication, “Improving Safety in Postoperative Handoff Communication with Telemedicine and Machine Learning,” in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Digital Healthcare Research Program 2023 Year in Review. Their innovative project, EnhanCed HandOffs (ECHO), aims to improve postoperative handoff communication using telemedicine and machine learning technologies.

ECHO focuses on optimizing care delivery by enhancing communication during postoperative handoffs, reducing medical errors, and improving patient safety. The project features the Intelligent Interactive Care Continuity (INTERACT) bundle, which includes a telemedicine-augmented handoff process and machine learning-augmented reports, making postoperative care more personalized and efficient. Congratulations to Dr. Abraham and her team for this significant achievement!
